Ugly Bridesmaid Dresses
Surviving the Ugly Bridesmaid Dress: A True Test of Friendship
Very few people can pull off lime green or electric pink
with panache. For this reason, bridesmaids often
sacrifice fashion for friendship. Whats going to look
best on the wearer is not always the first consideration
for a sentimental bride.
Choosing the wrong color can make for one ugly
bridesmaids dress. Pattern, style, accessories and
other details can also make what might have been a
passable ensemble into a nightmare. Etiquette dictates
that no one should outshine the bride on her wedding
day, but some dresses really go beyond the dictates of
bad taste.
Here are a few amusing real life anecdotes from harried
bridesmaids who value friendship and family more than
comfort, style and even common sense.
Mary M., Brooklyn, NY: My sister made me wear a dress
made out of grandmas old lace tablecloth. She claimed
it was for sentimental reasons. It was lacy. It was
itchy. It was horrible!
Adelia C., Harrisburg, PA: My bridesmaid dress was so
poofy, that I could barely fit through the church door.
Elizabeth P., Rosyln, NY: Not only was my bridesmaids
dress hot pink (the worst color imaginable for me), it
was so puckered that it looked like a wrinkled trash
bag.
Felicia B. Syosset, Long Island: Have I got an ugly
bridesmaid dress story for you. My best friend decided
that she was going to have a Star Trek theme wedding. Of
course, I had to go along with it. I wore traditional
Klignon battle dress, which consisted of a leather
halter top, studded shoulder pads and what could only be
described as a leather kilt. Not only did I feel
incredibly foolish, but the entire get-up chafed so
badly that I was recovering for days. I couldnt bear to
watch a Star Trek episode after that.
Anna R. Stamford, Connecticut: When my cousin showed me
her choice of bridesmaid dress, I couldnt believe it.
Stripes, stripes and more stripes. Then, throw some
polka dots in and you look like youve just popped out
of a clown car. The dress also had this series of ties
on the side, which actually kept the dress from becoming
unraveled. I knew I was going to spend the whole night
keeping those ties in order. After a while, the ties,
(which were glued and not sewed on) began to come off
during the wedding reception. I finally wound up using
safety pins to hold the whole mess together.
So ladies, truly, at what price friendship and family?
Would you brave the ugly bridesmaids dress for the sake
of your best friends/ sisters /cousins wedding bliss?
Would your best friend/ sister/ cousin do the same for
you? Would you even ask them to and does it really
matter?
Consider one thing: You only have to wear the dress for
one day. Your best friend/ cousin/ sister etc. will
remember this day for a lifetime and the memories should
be pleasant. That being said- Grit your teeth, wear the
dress and laugh over the pictures.
